Ever wondered what it’s like working for a lifestyle website? We’ve had the opportunity to interview a Content Producer to find out more about this interesting role. Leandra Engelbrecht is a Content Producer for South Africa’s leading health website, Health24.
In addition to a BA Honours in English, she holds a BTech in Journalism. Although Leandra finds she doesn’t directly apply the theory learnt at varsity, her studies have contributed to the acquisition of new skills. Interestingly, it was her connection with her tertiary institution that exposed her to Media24’s job lists. While working as an Administrator in UWC’s English department, the secretary informed her about the Health24 Junior Writer vacancy and she applied immediately. After just one interview and a short spelling, grammar and writing test, she landed the job in less than a week.
Fast forward six years to where Leandra is responsible for elements on the home page, sending content to external partners, managing the brand’s social networks, and dealing appropriately with spammers. That’s not all though: she produces need-to-know newsletters and co-coaches and mentors the interns too.
She now works 8 hours a day flexi time, usually starting at 6:30 so that she can leave by 15:30. She describes her work environment as ‘chilled’ and appreciates the non-threatening approach her superiors have adopted. This makes for a positive, confident, and transparent management and staff relationship. If learning new things, writing and being in the middle of a fast paced industry appeals to you, then Leandra encourages and recommends you pursue content producing as a career. Furthermore, Leandra urges others to complete as many relevant courses as possible as it is important to stay on top of technological advances by presenting something unique and special.
Her first job was as a casual fitting room attendant at an Edgars branch, and she has worked as a receptionist too. Leandra now has her sights set on being a leading digital editor in the country – a role that will allow her to exercise her interest in Social Media Management to its full extent.
